Shirley Chisholm – Unbought and Unbossed

Hello again,

How are you on this ‘hump’ day?

I don’t know whether or not you have seen my instagram account? It has changed a bit perhaps since you last saw it. I have been doing Collage Challenge set by Paris Collage Collective. You should give it a go. It is so fun, they give a Creative Common license image every week for people to work from. I got to find the Library of Congress archive from them, all images are free to use. Amazing right?

This week the challenge is a picture of this lady.

Now, on PCC website you can download it straight away without going to the source. But you know me, too curious to let it go. Who is this lady?

It turns out she is another Kick-Ass lady!

Shirley Chisholm

  • 1st black woman elected to the United States Congress
  • 1st African-American candidate for a major party’s nomination for President of the United States
  • 1st Woman to run for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination

Google her to read more. I particularly like her campaign poster that said

BRING U.S TOGETHER, UNBOUGHT AND UNBOSSED

She has also said so many cool things, I am not particularly one for quotes but this one of hers is so short and it cuts through.

“If they don’t give you a seat at the table, bring a folding chair.”

Shirley Chisholm

This was the starting concept of this week’s collage.

Other cool things she said:

“In the end anti-black, anti-female, and all forms of discrimination are equivalent to the same thing: anti-humanism.”

and

“You don’t make progress by standing on the sidelines, whimpering and complaining. You make progress by implementing ideas.”

What do you think of her? Did you know about her before reading this?

I’d love to know what you think and your comments, you know where to send them.

Talk to you soon,

Jane
